Managing director of Healthcare Advisory, whose gripping, inspirational new book “CLEAR!” Living The Life You Didn’t Dream Of” features his own story of survival and triumph in the face of repeated medical crises, as well as a “how-to” guide – with exercises and action steps – designed to help the reader create their own best life possible. Salonpas® sat down with Dr. Williams to learn how he rebounded from tragedy and learn more about his advice for others:
What was the catalyst for you to author Clear!: Living the Life You Didn’t Dream of?
The catalyst for the book was the desire to help others struggling with life-threatening illnesses find the true value of life, and not be consumed by fear and depression when your lifelong dreams are threatened. When I realized what a blessing life has been for me, the words jumped off the page and allow me to not only tell my story, but add a workbook for the readers to sort through their own health challenges and come to their own conclusions about life.
How does someone come back from a rare heart disease that results in a cardiac arrest at 31 year of age… and another catastrophic illness in his fifties?
Two answers to this question:
1) With the unconditional support from an incredible wife who nursed me back to health both times, watched me cry everyday – but reassured me that everything would be OK.
2) With the incredible kindness from bystanders (in both instances) who performed CPR and allowed me to personally understand the kindness of humanity.
Tell me about the Kindness Scale?
Several friends told me that they understood the importance of being compassionate, but they didn’t know how to be compassionate. That is where I got the idea of putting together a scale of increasing kindness (or compassion) to help people become kinder. The scale starts with a simple smile and gets progressively more challenging with actions: opening doors, assisting a stranger…all the way to actually performing CPR (the highest level of the kindness scale).
What are your recommended five ways to bring grace, gratitude and immense joy into your life?
- Be kind to everyone
- Have tolerance for indifference, and understand that everyone has a reason why they have an opinion. That person’s experience may be different from yours and therefore his/her feelings about race, religion, or politics reflects that difference.
- Find your mission in life and create a path to succeeding in that mission
- Be comfortable with who you
- Be positive about life
Can everyone discover his or her true-life mission?
I am not sure. If found mine through a series of tragic experiences. I would like to think that if you really want to find your mission in life, there is a much more painless process of discovering that. The challenge is that many people do not seek to know what his or her mission is.
Describe a typical day in your life; from when you arise to when you retire.
- I wake up and thank God for another day.
- I get prepared for my day in a positive light, and commit to being successful at my job.
- Before I leave for work, I tell my wife, “I Love You. Have a great day!”
- I call my son at some point or text him to tell him I love him and to have a great day.
- Everyone I come in contact with throughout my day, I try to have some small or large positive (hopefully funny) impact on their life…a smile, a compliment.
- I call my wife about 5 times a day to check on her and tell her I love her.
- When I come home, we greet each other with a kiss and enjoy some fun activity…TV? Music? Dinner out?
- I call my mom every night before I go to bed to tell her I love her.
- I thank God for another day.
